Someone suggests an assistive listening device, you go looking, and the results are a wall of hardware. Neck loops. Body-pack receivers. Systems that get installed in a ceiling by a contractor. None of it looks like it has anything to do with the dinner table where you actually couldn’t hear.

What an assistive listening device is

An assistive listening device, usually shortened to ALD, is any tool that gets sound from where it’s made to your ears with less of the room in between. That’s the entire definition, and it’s one of the broader ideas in listening devices generally.

What the definition leaves out matters as much as what it says. There’s no requirement that the device be medical, or fitted by a clinician, or bought from one. Nothing specifies how the sound travels. A microphone sitting near someone’s mouth, sending what it hears straight to your ears, is doing the same job whether the link between them is radio, infrared, a magnetic field, or a plain cable.

So the category is doing a lot of work. Too much, actually, which is where the confusion starts.

The two things that share one name

This is the part the ranked pages don’t make clear, and it’s the reason the search results feel scattered. Two quite different families of product go by the same phrase.

Personal devices belong to you. You carry one, it works wherever you happen to be, and nobody else needs to have installed anything. A small amplifier with a wired microphone is the classic example. So is a phone.

Area systems are installed in a building and only exist inside it. A theater, a courtroom, a church, a lecture hall. The venue wires its sound system into a transmitter, and you pick up the signal with a receiver, either one they lend you at the desk or a telecoil in your own hearing aid. Walk out the door and the system is gone.

The distinction sounds academic until you’re trying to solve something. Personal devices are for the table in front of you. Area systems are for a room where the person talking is too far away for any microphone you could reasonably place. Roughly speaking, the crossover is distance.

I’ve spent a lot of time testing phone amplification in real rooms while building an app in this space, and the place it stops working is more predictable than I expected. Once the person talking is more than about 10 or 15 feet away, the microphone stops picking up a person in a room and starts picking up the room with a person somewhere in it. Every personal device hits that wall. The good ones just hit it a bit later.

The four types you’ll actually be offered

The NIDCD names four categories, and almost everything sold under this label is one of them.

Hearing loop systems run a wire around a room and drive a magnetic field through it. If your hearing aid has a telecoil, you switch it on and the sound arrives directly, with no receiver to borrow and nothing to hand back. Loops are the most elegant of the area systems for anyone who already wears hearing aids, and useless to anyone who doesn’t.

FM systems broadcast over radio to a small receiver. They’re common in classrooms, where a teacher wears the microphone and a student wears the receiver. The signal goes through walls, which is occasionally a feature and occasionally a problem.

Infrared systems send audio on light instead of radio. Light doesn’t pass through walls, so an infrared system can’t be overheard from the next room. That’s why courtrooms and cinemas use them.

Personal amplifiers are the odd one out. A microphone, an amplifier, and a pair of headphones or earbuds, all of it yours, none of it dependent on a venue. This is the only one of the four you can use tonight without anyone’s permission.

Three of those four require a building to have decided, in advance, to spend money on you. That’s worth sitting with.

Where your phone fits

The category’s own literature has a blind spot here, and I say that carefully because NIDCD is a source I cite and trust. Its list of four doesn’t mention phones at all. Neither do the other consumer pages ranking for this term. Where they do mention a smartphone, it’s as an accessory to something else: a remote control for hearing aids, a Bluetooth sink for streaming, a way to pick which channel of a venue’s system you want.

But a phone with an amplification app and headphones is a personal amplifier. Not like one. It is one, by the definition at the top of this page. Microphone, amplification, sound in your ears, less room in between. The hardware happens to also make calls.

That omission isn’t a conspiracy, it’s lag. The category’s vocabulary was set when a personal amplifier meant a dedicated box, and the reference pages haven’t caught up. The practical cost of the lag is real though: people are told the entry point to this category is hardware and a clinic, when for a lot of situations the entry point is already in their pocket.

Two honest limits, because the point of saying this is that it’s true rather than that it’s convenient.

The distance wall is the same one every personal device hits. A phone won’t reach the front of a lecture hall, and no app changes that. If the room has an area system, the area system wins, every time.

And the connection matters more than the software. Bluetooth adds delay, and if you can see the speaker’s face you’ll notice voices landing a beat behind the lips. Wired headphones are tighter. I keep a pair specifically for conversations where I want to watch someone talk, which is a workaround for a limitation rather than a feature, but it works.

It’s limited to Apple’s own headphones and MFi hearing devices, which is a real constraint worth understanding before you count on it. What you can ask a venue to provide

This is a thing you’re allowed to ask for, and it doesn’t get mentioned much.

Under the ADA, covered entities have to provide auxiliary aids and services when they’re needed for effective communication, and ADA.gov names “assistive listening systems and devices” explicitly on the list of what that includes. That covers state and local government services, and it covers businesses and nonprofits serving the public. Theaters, cinemas, houses of worship, courtrooms, conference venues.

What’s actually available on any given night varies, and a receiver that’s been in a drawer since 2019 with a flat battery is a common outcome. So ask ahead rather than at the door. Call the box office, ask whether they have an assistive listening system and which kind, and ask whether you need a telecoil or whether they lend receivers. Ten minutes on the phone beats discovering it in your seat.

Which one to try first

The ladder runs cheapest and most reversible to most committed, and there’s no reason to start higher than you need to.

Start with a phone and whatever headphones you already own. It costs little or nothing, it takes an evening, and it answers the question that actually matters: does getting a microphone closer to the speaker help you in the rooms you’re in? If it does, you’ve learned something real about your own situation. If it doesn’t, you’ve spent nothing finding out, and that’s a useful result too.

Then, if you’re mostly struggling in specific venues rather than at home, ask those venues what they have. Free, already installed, and better than anything personal at distance.

Then look at dedicated hardware, or at hearing aids with a telecoil if a clinician is already in the picture. By this point you know what problem you’re solving, which is a much better place to spend money from.

One thing this ladder isn’t: a substitute for getting your hearing looked at. If conversations have been getting harder, that’s worth raising with a doctor or audiologist regardless of what you do with a phone. I build audio software, not hearing care (more about that).
