Which AirPods this applies to
Apple’s Hearing Aid feature runs on AirPods Pro 2 and AirPods Pro 3. That’s the list. No firmware update is coming to change this. The feature leans on hardware in the H2 chip and on the in-ear microphones the Pro models have and the others don’t.

What two labs actually measured
This is where the coverage gets thin, because the numbers exist and almost nobody leads with them.
HearingUp, run by audiologist Cliff Olson, put AirPods Pro 2 through real-ear measurement, which is the same verification an audiologist performs on a fitted device. His results came out at 3.2 out of five overall untuned and 4.5 tuned. The number that matters more sits underneath that: speech in noise scored 0.8 untuned and 2.6 tuned.
HearingTracker ran AirPods Pro 3 through their own lab. Their measurements landed at 0.9 out of five for speech in quiet and 1.2 for speech in noise, straight out of the box. After tuning, with ambient noise reduction turned down, the same earbuds scored 3.5 and 2.7.
Two labs, two different products, a year apart, same shape of result. Untuned it’s close to the floor. Tuned it’s respectable in quiet and mediocre in noise.
Olson also measured the working range: about 10 dB of volume adjustment, three to four dB of balance and tone trim either way, and roughly 11 dB of noise reduction at maximum. Those are real numbers on a real fit, and they’re modest ones.

The default setup is the problem
Put those two lab results next to each other and something obvious falls out. The version of this feature that people form opinions about is the untuned one, and the untuned one scores 0.8 and 1.2 out of five for the exact task everyone cares about.
That’s not a hardware limit. It’s a setup step nobody takes.
Tuning costs nothing and takes about 10 minutes:
- Connect the AirPods, open Settings, and tap your AirPods name at the top of the screen.
- Tap Hearing Assistance, then Set Up Hearing Assistance.

Step six is the one people skip, and it’s the one that separates a lab score from a useful evening. A profile built in silence is tuned for silence. I’ve spent a lot of time testing amplification in rooms rather than on a bench, and the setting that works in a quiet living room is reliably too flat for a café with a tile floor. Take two minutes to adjust it somewhere hard, once, and leave it there.
Transparency mode is not optional
Apple documents this in a single line and the reviews mostly skip past it: “The Hearing Aid feature amplifies sounds in your environment only when you’re in Transparency mode.”
Switch to Noise Cancellation or Adaptive and the amplification stops. No alert, no indicator, nothing that tells you the feature you turned on is now doing nothing. You just quietly stop hearing better and assume the whole thing was overhyped.
Adaptive mode is the trap, because it sounds like the smart choice and it’s what a lot of people leave their AirPods on by default. Check the noise control setting first, every time, before concluding anything is wrong.
Where it holds up
For mild loss, in a quiet or moderately quiet room, one or two people talking, tuned properly: it works. A 3.5 out of five for speech in quiet is a genuinely useful device. About the “misleading” complaint
Search this topic and you’ll run into people, including plenty in hearing-aid communities, arguing that Apple overstated what these do. That criticism is worth taking seriously rather than waving off, because it’s partly right and partly a misreading.
It’s right about the framing. A 2.6 out of five for speech in noise is not what the phrase conjures when a company the size of Apple says “hearing aid,” and the launch coverage leaned on the regulatory milestone far harder than on the measured performance. Somebody with moderate loss who bought AirPods Pro expecting them to handle a family dinner has a legitimate grievance.
It’s a misreading in one specific way, though. Apple’s own documentation scopes this to adults with perceived mild to moderate loss, and it doesn’t claim parity with a fitted device anywhere. The gap sits between the marketing temperature and the documentation, which is a familiar place for a gap to sit.
The practical version: judge it against nothing, and it’s a real improvement for a lot of people. Judge it against a device an audiologist fitted to your ears, and it loses on every axis except price and how it looks.
